Cologne

We went straight into Cologne from Dusseldorf to meet up with Rafiq, Nik's brother who's studying in Germany. It was nice to have someone who's familiar with the system and language to join us.

Our first stop in Cologne was the Cologne Cathedral, or the Dom. It is a Gothic structure that was built in 1248 but only completed in 1880.

When it was finally completed, it was the tallest building in the world. The Dom is dedicated to Saints Peter and Mary.
One of the interesting things about the church was that it was built to house the relics of Magi. It is thought to hold the remains of the 3 Wise Men, whose bones and 2000-year old clothes were discovered at the opening of the shrine in 1864.
The splattered ice-cream on the edge of the building was a distraction but that's what advertising is all about.
As usual....
